Australias’ Barrier Reef

The Cairns harbour houses a fleet that contains some fairly incredible dive vessels. The newest member of the fleet is the Seastar, pretty much unveiled this past month.

This unique spectacular cutting edge vessel is ninety feet long, and would make the trip out to Seastar’s scuba dive sites in under an hour or so. The boat is certainly quick and also stable, along with tons of shaded and air-conditioned cabin space.

Seastar Cruises also has constantly prided themselves on providing an extremely exclusive and personal adventure, and they may be altering their experditions to be able to improve the small group experiences that they have normally supplied.

We tend to really like the particular basic fact that their owners control the actual numbers on board to exactly 40 persons, incredibly well below the actual total capacity of the charter boat; which would mean that there can be a lot of breathing space on board. Using a speedier boat they can certainly abandon a little less earlier, however , still be typically the first vessel to head to Michaelmas Cay, so snorkelers and birdwatchers get it all to themselves. This journey is unquestionably the A-list cruise with regards to birdwatchers that really want to combine a good reef escape which includes an opportunity to view exotic seabird varieties.

A nice a lot faster cruise out also will mean extra time could possibly be spent at Michaelmas Cay combined with Seastar’s different dive mooring on Hastings Reef; customers can right now spend more than 5 hours out at the reef.

Last but not least, once the Japanese people return to their yearly fall/winter scientific whale hunt, they might anticipate the multitude of admirers and protectors regarding Migaloo to be protesting the kill. Although the Japanese proposal to be able to keep on industrial whaling was in fact knocked back, for the very first time in several years the suspect scientific quest may include the executing of 75 Humpback whales, hence Migaloo might be at risk whenever this individual travels to Antarctic waters the following springtime as well as summertime. The Great Barrier Reef has also been awarded the world Travel and leisure for Future honor for Greatest Vacation location during this year’s Tourism with regard to Future Awards held in Lisbon, Italy. The honor, given by the World Vacation and Tourism Authorities, is regarded as one of the main “oscars” in the travel related market.

Because of the media reports related to the risks connected with climate change at the Great Barrier Reef it’s indeed nice how the reef has received an award which also has a title that includes the term “Tourism to Tomorrow” therefore we maintain great hope with regard to worldwide efforts being which are designed to cut the sum of carbon dioxide due to people’s habits. The key options, hardships, and preparing still has yet to occur, although we keep on being optimists when it comes to defence of the reef.

Throughout the previous ten years fantastic strides were made to preserve the reef, through a synchronised management plan that looks at happenings both within the reef like sportfishing and also tourisms, along with neighbouring coastal areas. Over 30% of the Great Barrier Reef is totally protected from fishing as well as other extractive pursuits during the past ten years.

The honor sported this Judges’ opinion: “Enormous progress has been made to help include your really cutting-edge travel and leisure marketplace in the control over incredibly substantial aquatic conservation region.”

The risk associated with global warming extends well outside of the Great Barrier Reef, and it’s causes involve individuals along with industries al over the world, not only Australia. Most of us hope to actually see a powerful coalition of countries acting to eliminate greenhouse gasses successfully, as well as note that team include both Australia and then the Usa.

A Cape York River Crossing

Leaving normality behind at Cairns, we journeyed up the Peninsula Developmental Road. This further deteriorated in to a dusty corrugated trail which wound along the route of the telegraph line, between giant termite mounds and across numerous rivers as much as the little Aboriginal city of Bamaga on Cape York. “The beginning of HELL — get back if you can”, announced an amusing handpainted sign even as headed off into the wilderness!

River crossings of almost all manner and form interupted our own journey — with axle-deep mud, decaying wooden bridges (the odd log missing here and there to add to the process), deep dust or fast flowing water to keep you busy. It was a classic four wheel drive experience. The grandest challenge, however, was the crossing in the Jardine River.

Even in the dry season, the Jardine River, just 35 km south of Bamaga, is a wide, one metre deep, fast-flowing river. In 1982, the luxury of a little ferry had just become offered to carry the vehicles carrying the less brave across this famous barrier for that princely sum of $20. Many marital battles then erupted around the banks of the Jardine because cautious wives and thrill-seeking husbands debated the relative merits from the challenging river crossing and the tame punt ride. As newlyweds, we too had the dispute here, but in our case it was the adventure-seeking wife that desired the river journey!

To drive across a river such as this requires lots of preparation. A diesel motor such as ours requires a long air snorkel to attract air from well above any possible water level. Tyres must be deflated, waterproof covers packed across the engine and openings such as fuel tanks and doors should be thoroughly waterproofed. We watched with dread as numerous vehicles attempted the crossing — and several failed, becoming stuck mid-river with the murkys swirling across the driver’s feet and camping gear floating at the back of the vehicle!

Finally the adventure-seeking wife won out. A group of fellow Patrol travellers came to our help and gave us a snorkel along with covers which fitted the vehicle. So with our vehicle decorated like a Christmas turkey, we drove down to the muddy waters of the Imposing Jardine.

Across the river all of us drove, pushing a low bow-wave ahead of us. John said it felt so excellent he wanted to change direction and keep driving the river! Then through a heart-stopping very deep hole near the end and up the steep bank we drove, masters of the Jardine. I bet they do not have this much fun if you do one of the organised Cape York Tours.

Our wet vehicle on the other hand seemed little the worse for its adventure. However, it cost us more to exchange the differential oils that had become waterlogged compared to the little punt ride would have cost. So sanity prevailed on our return journey a month later and the Landcruiser got a drier ride over the Jardine on the car punt!

All About Australia’s Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the greatest natural wonders of the world stretching from the northernmost tip of the continent to just north of Fraser Island. The great barrier reef stretches over 1600 miles along the east coast.

The Great Barrier Reef is a sanctuary for well over 1100 fish species, whales, dolphins, dugongs. Many different types of birdlife live on the reef.

The coral which builds the reef itself is also a living thing. When it dies it turns light grey, and creates the structure for new coral growth. The different types of coral grow at varying speeds, while some are very quick growing, some varieties take well over a 100 years to mature. The vivid colours are not because of the coral but by the growth of algae living on it.

The great barrier reef needs a tropical climate as it requires on warm shallow waters to thrive. Nutrient rich water and just the right amount of light is needed to keep the coral healthy.

With hundreds of thousands of square miles of reef it is a diving and snorkelling paradise. Various day cruises are available from the mainland right along the coastline. Even if you don’t swim you can see the wonders of the reefs wonders through glass bottom boat tours.

The reef is heritage listed and large sections are protected from fishing and the taking of coral from the reef isn’t allowed to protect it for future generations.

The tropical and friendly capital of the far north, Cairns is full of things to do. Positioned in the middle of some of the most photographically beautiful and environmentally important areas on the planet, Cairns is the obvious doorway to the natural riches of rainforest, tablelands, outback, and The Great Barrier Reef. Cairns is strongly placed as one of Australia’s must-see travelers destinations, being the departure point for a whole host of outdoor pastimes. Cairns reef tours are undoubtedly the thing to do for most tourists, although the area is quickly becoming well-known as the adventure sport capital of Australia.

The allure of holiday packages is that you often get a discount and that it is easy to organise multiple travel arrangements all at the same time, that way eliminating the chance of mistakes. Although you will find some variations, vacation packages should definately include more than just airline reservations. Depending on the package in question, they may include resort accommodations, some day trips and car hire as well.

These types of vacation packages are perfect for those who have found a good price on airfares independently or for those who have already made their airline reservations.

My word on the planets best diving sites.

Because I am a professional scuba diver, Isometimes get asked what are my favourite dive sites. Here they are as I rate them.

1. The Maldives

The best way to experience this island paradise is on a live-aboard dive cruise: you can do up to four dives each day and it works out good value. From April until September you are pretty much guaranteed to see manta rays but they are there all year round. North Male Island and South Ari atoll provide reliably good diving around the atoll walls, with good and schooling game species as well as all the small colourful marine life you expect to see. The Maldives undoubtedly has the best all-round diving in the Indian Ocean, and to me the journey starts the moment I get picked up from the airport for a speedboat ride to the dive boat.

2.Yongala Wreck, Australia

The Yongala is a shipwreck on the Great Barrier Reef, south of December 21st, 2011 | Comments Off Posted in Uncategorized

A Day Trip to The Reef with Deep Sea Divers Den

Saturday , 24th July, and what a picture perfect North Queensland day to go to the Barrier Reef… and we made a great choice to try “Reef Quest”, from Cairns which provided an absolutely fantastic day tour.
After getting in from Adelaide yesterday I was due some Cairns weather. It was a bit chillier than I had expected and I was glad I had packed trackies and a hoodie!
I’ve been vacationing in Cairns for over 10 years and have been out on enough Reef Trips and let’s face it, they all do pretty much the same day: 2 reefs, snorkelling gear, lunch and coffee & tea – so it’s the dive sites and little extras that count.

From the time you board to the time you get off, the service and staff are very professional. The staff to guest numbers are really high, as there was always someone right there to assist with any questions or dramas. The staff seem really happy and their service and attention were great.

Reef Quest supply a wetsuit for snorkellers which is normally an extra (usually $7.00 hire) on other trips. For the snorkelers a wetsuit provides you with sun protection and also buoyancy which makes snorkelling simpler and much more enjoyable.

Reef Quest have a choice of 13 different moorings and choose the best 2 reefs based on the weather conditions. A guided snorkelling tour is also on offer at both sites and this is a real bonus for beginners or anyone wanting to learn a little bit more about the reef. The snorkel guide dives to the bottom and picks up things like jellyfish and starfish and brings them up so you can all have a good look. They also know where things are eg. giant clams, so it does add a lot to the great barrier reef experience.

Lunch was yum with plenty of variety including potato salad, rice salad, leaf salad, local fruits, cold meats, bread rolls and soup. There is tea and coffee and soft drinks from the bar available throughout the day.

To sum things up it was a great day.

Profile of a Booking Agent

he holiday season is almost upon us and this is the best time of the year to be coming to Cairns, because the weather is pleasant rather than stifling hot, and the rain is still quite a while away, so the humidity isn’t too bad. The Cairns Region is a kaledioscope of colour and a hive of activity that has so much to offer as it looks after everyone. So whether you are looking for an unique destination that is relaxing and going to keep the children happy, or want to spend time alone with your significant other on a romantic short break the Cairns region offers an idyllic place to unwind and absorb some of Northern Australia’s civilisation, whilst you enjoy some of the most photographic scenery, stunning wildlife and simply beautiful environment As Jennifer Smith, general manager of an Australian vacation destination supplier with a focus on customer service said, “Australia is the best country in the world.”

“Cairns is lucky to have the reef and the Daintree Rainforst, and both are just about on my doorstep. I love nature and the reef is so amazing to explore,” Jennifer said. “We live in one of the best destinations in Australia and perhaps the world, and after 20 years of travelling my home is here in Cairns, after having experienced so much.” Jennifer who came to Australia from Canada ten years ago, has lived in Cairns for the past eight years but what makes this little lady different from the others is her warmth and enthusiasm, and truly unparalleled tourism background. “I worked as a gold bullion trader in the Congo. I have also worked on a tour desk, and for several reef operators, I have been employed as a photographer and in sales and marketing.I have also been employed for a Cape Tribulation Rainforest operator”, said Debbie. “I have hand fed with sharks, humpback whales and maori wrasse, as well as sky-dived, scuba-dived and snorkelled, bungy-jumped and abseiled, and I can tell you that every activity was breathtaking.” “We offer a personalised service, as many people want to have a holiday that is special and suited to their tastes. It greatly satisfies me helping strangers to achieve their getaway goals and I like to cater personally to their expectations, as well as their family needs. “Not all families are able to do the same activities due to physical requirements, and this is why I ask questions when someone contacts me to help plan their next getaway, so that I can work out each persons wants,” said Jennifer. “We are able to design your holiday, no matter where you choose to travel in Australia, as we are travel agents who have seen and experienced most of what this amazing country has to offer.”

Well, I Recently Bought A Kayak

Nine years after being employed by a sea kayak touring and sales company I’ve finally got around to aquiring myself one. I have spent the last six years paddling the areas rivers in an older style white water kayak, but this just wasn’t suitable for the coastal zones.
This was getting extremely frustrating as I live 200 yards from the beach at Clifton Beach, a coastal suburb just north of Cairns .
I’d already explored the Russell River numerous times, the Upper Barron River was getting a bit boring also, so I had to get into that ocean.
As Cairns is a small country center the purchase of a seakayak and the assorted accessories is not the most simple task. You can either go with Ebay, wait for someone to sell it secondhand or just work with what you can find local.
Thats what I did. I made the most of what I could find, with the notion of then turning it into what I needed. I found a fairly affordable chinease made boat brand new. Now I knew that the fittings would be cheap, I also knew it probably wouldn’t be 100% watertight. Luckily I was enjoyably surprised.
The only fittings that will need changing are the elastic cord deck ropes and elastic cord steering lines. I may substitute the inner steering lines with stainless wire as needs be.
As for kitting out the kayak with emergency gear my list is as follows
* V Flag for attratring attention
* Emergency tool containing whistle, mini compass, match striker, signalling mirror and small watertight storage for matches.
* Distress flares
* surplus paddle (cut into 3 sections for storage)
* Another signalling mirror ( I don’t desire only having one of anything that sinks)
* 3 x 1.5 liter containers of water
* 6 snap flouro glow sticks
* compact 1st aid kit
* thermal blanket

I already own some nautical charts as I’m a sailer, but I figure I’ll just copy relevant sections and laminate the smaller sheets. I have a compass ready to be fitted.

The expeditions I have planned in the immediate future to test everything out are Green Island, Fitzroy Island for the Fitzroy Island New Years Eve Party, Low Isles Dunk Island and Snapper Island.

In the future I plan to do the Hinchinbrook channel and paddle all the way the island. This is all leading up to the big expedition of Great Barrier Reef. I can fit approximately 100 pounds of camping gear and supplies without becoming too unseaworthy, so this should get me where I want to go. And I can sometimes tow a trolling line to replace my regular freeze dried diet with some fresh fish. I’ll also be stopping and camping so the barramundi gear will get a good work out too.
